Pand P Podium – Run Into the Apocalypse

Het trio bestaande uit drums, saxofoon en basklarinet gaat de uitdaging aan akoestische texturen te manipuleren met digitale en analoge geluidsprocessors, waarbij ze zichzelf verliezen in een eindeloos pad, totdat ze elkaar weer vinden en samensmelten tot één geheel van grooves, melodieën en onverwachte geluiden. De gemeenschappelijke basis die het startpunt van deze reis vormt, is gebaseerd op Rita’s originele composities; kneedbare contouren geïnspireerd door jazz, Afrikaanse, Balkan en techno muziekstijlen.

A trio made of drums, saxophone and bass clarinet takes up the challenge of manipulating acoustic textures with digital and analog sound processors, losing themselves along anever ending path, until they find each other again merging into one single entity ofgrooves, melodies and unexpected sounds. The common ground which sets the starting point of such journey is based on Rita’s original compositions; malleable outlines inspired by jazz, african, balkan and techno musical styles.

The Project. Long departed from the lands of a heteronormative musical cosmo and inperpetual search of an authentic voice, Rita Brancato inquires about emancipation of drums between jazz and electronic, with an open ear to natural timbres. With her new project “Run Into The Apocalypse” she aims at putting together what she has been researching for two years at Codarts University’s Master: how to expand the possibilities of a drum set with live electronics.

What if a drum could express harmonic content? What if its sharp, fast-decayedtimbric palette consisted of long sounds too? What if it could trigger words, chords, or amelodic sequence? What if it could reproduce pitched sounds and modulate them along a scale like a melodic instrument would do? What if it could sound like a hundred drums are being played at the same time? To do so, she and her hybrid drums pair up with two great horn players long established in the Netherlands, Andrea Leone on tenor sax and Massimiliano Dosoli on bass clarinet, in acollective exploration of the possibilities of processed sounds.
